Green Hills of Africa Audible – Unabridged

Green Hills of Africa Audible – Unabridged ridged
Author: Josh Lucas ID: B000LP5E82

His second major venture into nonfiction (after Death in the Afternoon, 1932), Green Hills of Africa is Ernest Hemingway’s lyrical journal of a month on safari in the great game country of East Africa, where he and his wife, Pauline, journeyed in December of 1933. Hemingway’s well-known interest in – and fascination with – big-game hunting is magnificently captured in this evocative account of his trip. In examining the poetic grace of the chase, and the ferocity of the kill, Hemingway also looks inward, seeking to explain the lure of the hunt and the primal undercurrent that comes alive on the plains of Africa. Yet Green Hills of Africa is also an impassioned portrait of the glory of the African landscape, and of the beauty of a wilderness that was, even then, being threatened by the incursions of man.

Hem is hunting both big game and big literature in "Green Hills." On this 1933-34 African safari, his jovial, Socratic drinking pal "Pop" is actually Phillip Percival the famous white hunter who conducted Theodore Roosevelt on his first African safari. As a young man, Hemingway owned a copy of TR’s book "African Game Trails," and it is undoubtedly one of the reasons he went on this safari, which was financed to the tune of $25,000 Depression dollars by his wife Pauline’s uncle Gus, part owner of Richard Hudnut cosmetics. Further evidence of Hem’s fascination with Africa can be seen in the way Jake Barnes teases Robert Cohn in "The Sun Also Rises." In chapter two, Jake says, " Did you ever think about going to British East Africa to shoot?" Cohn’s lack of enthusiasm for an immediate trek to Mombassa seals his fate as a jerk. "Green Hills" vindicates Hem’s real aficion for hunting–filled with long descriptions of the arduous and sometimes futile tracking of game, not just celebratory "kills." Finally, the best preparation for reading "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber" and "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" is to hike and sweat through these 300 pages of African "country." The long, crescent-horned sable which Hem was painstakingly stalking at the end of "Green Hills" never turned up. But instead, the experience of his African safari, was distilled into those two incredible stories–one about a coward who gets a chance to redeem himself and the other about a washed-up writer whose approaching death stimulates him to dream about–and the reader to enjoy–the fiction he never got to actually write. Unless you’ve got a rich uncle or wife, this is as close as you’ll get to an East African safari, and it is very, very fine.

"Green Hills of Africa" was Hemingway’s first non-fiction book, written after a 1933 trip to Eastern Africa (Kenya, Tanzania). It went a long way in establishing Hemingway’s reputation as a hunter and adventurer. Though non-fiction it has the organization of a Hemingway novel and reads much like his other works. His descriptions of the landscape, local people, other hunters, and especially animals, hunting, and killing are superb. Hemingway also shares, mostly as dialogue, his thoughts on life, war, fate, and notably literature and the literary life. His often-quoted idea of all American literature being descended from one book by Mark Twain is presented here, as are his thoughts on how America destroys its writers. Some knowledge of Eastern Africa (such as a basic history, a guidebook, an encyclopedia article) might be useful as Hemingway often does provide much introductory material. With "Green Hills of Africa" Hemingway follows in the footsteps of Theodore Roosevelt’s "African Game Trails"; both did much to popularize among Americans the idea of recreational travel in Africa. Hemingway went on to write two fictional stories set in Africa: "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" and "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber". A good book, moreso for fans of Papa and those with an interest in Africa.

Much credit is given ‘Papa’ for his writings on Africa. I can only attribute this to the fact that he is a famous author and more people have read his Africa books/two short stories more than any others. Much like Roosevelts game trails this book is a chronicle of Hemingways two month safari. And like Teddys book comes across as just that. After all they only both went on one safari. If you are really interested in reading about African big game hunting there are two books that communicate the vibrancy and feel of hunting dangerous game in Africa better than Hemingway or Roosevelt. Death in the long grass by Peter Hathaway Capstick and Pondoro by John Taylor are my two favorites. Both are men who spent their lives living and hunting in Africa. Capstick as a Proffesional hunter and game warden in the latter half of this century until 1975, and Taylor as an Ivory poacher from the 1920-30’s(?) to the late 40’s. If you are anti-hunting forget it but if you are in-between and looking for something more on Africa then Please take a look. I am not saying that Hemingway is bad, it’s just that in my opinion Taylor and Capstick bring African hunting alive in a way Hemingway can’t touch in the best parts of Green Hills. Hemingway may be the master when it comes to other types of literature, but when it comes to describing hunting dangerous game in Africa Taylor and Capstick reign supreme.

Living Life to the Fullest with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome PDF Free Download

Living Life to the Fullest with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome: Guide to Living a Better Quality of Life While Having EDS Hardcover – July 17, 2015
Author: PT Kevin Muldowney ID: 1478758880

Hardcover: 400 pagesPublisher: Outskirts Press (July 17, 2015)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 1478758880ISBN-13: 978-1478758884 Product Dimensions: 8.5 x 0.9 x 11 inches Shipping Weight: 1.6 pounds (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #22,934 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #3 in Books > Health, Fitness & Dieting > Diseases & Physical Ailments > Genetic #15 in Books > Medical Books > Allied Health Professions > Physical Therapy #36 in Books > Health, Fitness & Dieting > Exercise & Fitness > Injuries & Rehabilitation

This book is for you if:
-like most of us, you have only been able to find physical therapists who were ineffective, made your joints more unstable or even severely injured you
-you would like your money to go toward a compassionate physical therapist who believes EDSers and believes IN EDSers. You’ll be proactively helping prevent the deterioration of your health, instead of relying on healthcare professionals who are either too dismissive or who give up and tell you you’ll never be active again
-your EDS is severe enough to limit your physical abilities in any way
-you are in any amount of pain that you’d like reduce

This book was written by my physical therapist, Kevin Muldowney, who is one of the only PTs in the country to specialize in Ehlers-Danlos. (Seriously, EDSers drive in from out of state to see him.) Unlike physical therapists who give you a "cookie cutter" set of exercises designed for people with normal collagen, he became an expert at treating EDS bodies by systematically examining a substantial number of EDSers over long time periods, as he slowly added in exercises he developed specifically with EDS biomechanics in mind. He has an extremely high success rate of decreIDg pain and disability in almost his EDS patients (most of whom I know personally). You can bring this book to any "manual physical therapist" in the country, and it will teach them exactly how to treat you. A lot of the pain reduction occurs slowly over time, but some strong, temporary relief happens immediately with the manual corrections of your subluxations that this book outlines (it’s MUCH safer than chiropractors if your PT is well-trained). This is a long exercise regimen, but it builds slowly and works WITH you and your body. Itreally pays off in the long run–your joints will be more stable than they have been in years!

I have been following this protocol for over a year and a half and at the age of 65, the time I have put into it has been totally worth it. On my good days, the sacrum holds and the up slips have gone away. It takes time, determination and commitment to follow up and do the exercises but they are not hard and do in time strengthen your muscles, thus allowing you to hold better. This book is not meant for you to take home and do yourself. You need to find a willing PT that will use the book as the guide and watch you try each new step and then check your body to be sure you held while doing the workout. It is safe, gentle, must be geared to your body and it’s needs. I am thrilled with my results and love that this is allowing me to be proactive with my life!!!

I am one of those people who have driven out-of-state to see Kevin Muldowney. I was desperate for relief from the pain and shopping for a wheelchair when I stumbled across an online presentation he had given. It was the first spark of hope I had felt in a long time. Kevin was able to identify that I had a dislocated sacrum and bilateral upslips shortly after arriving for my first visit and was able to adjust it right then and there. I painfully limped in hanging on to my husband’s arm and walked out on my own. It felt like a miracle because I had been walking around like that for over a year and none of the many medical professionals I had been to had any idea what to do. It really works!! If you have EDS and are looking for answers, I highly recommend his book.

Smithsonian Handbooks: Rocks & Minerals (Smithsonian Handbooks) Paperback – July 12, 2002

Series: Smithsonian HandbooksPaperback: 256 pagesPublisher: DK; 1st edition (September 1, 2002)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 0789491060ISBN-13: 978-0789491060 Product Dimensions: 5.8 x 0.6 x 8.5 inches Shipping Weight: 1 pounds (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #2,891 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #1 in Books > Science & Math > Earth Sciences > Rocks & Minerals #2 in Books > Science & Math > Nature & Ecology > Reference #84 in Books > Sports & Outdoors
When I took Geology in college, I loved the course. I only had one problem. It was very difficult for me to identify rocks and minerals in the field. If I had had this pocket field guide, the course would have been a snap.
Now, I enjoy taking my children to study outcroppings, and this book will be a great addition to our investigations.
First, the photographs are stunning. In fact, any temptation I might have had to develop my own samples is set aside by having these wonderful images to use.
Second, the information is detailed and thorough. There is a lot about the crystalline structure of each mineral, the hardness, and many tests that are specific to that particular mineral. There is a very good section that describes how to apply the hardness tests (I always had trouble memorizing that area for some reason). There is plenty of good safety information for how to use the various acids that can be employed to identify minerals. Everything is nicely summarized so it is easy to find.
Third, all those subtle distinctions about various kinds of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks that used to puzzle me are very clear here. Whew!
Fourth, the book has great directions for locating good spots to examine rocks.
Fifth, you also receive a wonderful description of the equipment you need, and ways to use it safely.
Whether you think you like rocks or not, you should give this book a try. It will open up a very interesting world full of ways to locate and identify interesting rocks and understand the stories they can tell. As a result, you will have immensely more understanding of the world around you.
I also suggest that you read up on plate mechanics as well, so that you understand more about how the landscape is formed before erosion takes over.

Owning the FOXFIRE series of books this is one that I probably use the most, since I am an organic gardener who found value in the information on planting according by the moons phase as well as how to weave baskets as well as the quilting section.
These are not fancy dancy books, but basic down to earth helpful information that the modern homesteaders we know still use. And the section on snake lore is informative as well as enchanting. Same with the section on moonshine.
And for those like ourselves who have designed and are in the slow process of building our dream homes or cottages the section on chimney building is one of the best we have ever read or used.
I also will add that the used copy we bought via ,com to replace another copy we gave away, arrived in mint condition. If you haven’t bought used books via .com you are missing out on a money saving gem.

The Foxfire series is the creation of English teacher Elliott Wigginton (Wig) who made it a point to have students participating in his program interview older folks to find out how they did things in everyday life. And even though this is the work of high school students, the writing is clear, concise, informative, and very readable. Good writing is good writing.

Each volume is like a time capsule, capturing the wisdom and know-how from individuals born around the turn of the 20th century. And while the focus is based around the inhabitants in and around Rabun County, Georgia, this information shows life as it was in America circa the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.

After reading several of these volumes, I think what appealed to me most of all was the fact that these older folks in the 80s and 90s weren’t viewed as forgotten relics of a bygone era. They were treated with respect and dignity, and their memories treated as the treasures that they indeed are. It’s a shame nowadays that we don’t have more publications like Foxfire that highlight the knowledge gained from our older population. So many folks in the 70s, 80s, and 90s sit alone at home, or nursing homes forgotten and alone. They are untapped resources of great stories and wisdom. Fortunately for us, the people at Foxfire realized the value of these individuals and preserved some of those stories for future generations to cherish and enjoy.

If you have an interest in 19th century knowlege and an appreciation or an interest in how things used to be, you cannot do without this series.

My great-grand parents and my grandparents and even most recently my 97 year old aunt did live and think like this. I at the age of 52 now have planted by the signs all my life since age 8. My mother believed in a lot of the old remedies in this book. My mother’s mother was part Cherokee indian and they too passed along a lot of what was in the book. If things continue on the same tract as they are going now, we will probably be doing this very same thing real soon. The only problem, the young generation of today do not know how to do any of the stuff in the foxfire book and just laugh at us oldies when we try to tell them how it was and may very well be in the future. I hope they never have to experience this way of life. They will never make it. I have an issue I purchased in 1972 . I can’t tell you how many time I have referred to it regarding some of the remedies and the food. A person can make a great quilt from this also. Never tried the still "ha, ha"

The Shepherd’s Crown – September 1, 2015

The Shepherd’s Crown (Tiffany Aching) Hardcover – September 1, 2015
Author: Visit ‘s Terry Pratchett Page ID: 0062429973

From School Library Journal

Gr 6 Up—Pratchett (The Long Utopia [HarperCollins, 2015]) leaves his fans with one last glorious tale of Discworld, this one starring his youngest heroine, the witch Tiffany Aching. When Death comes for Granny Weatherwax, she leaves behind her cabin and, by default, the job of unofficial leader of the witches to Tiffany. For the teen protagonist, being a witch has always been about doing what must be done, so she shoulders the burden but goes about things in her own way. She has soon taken on the first-ever male witch apprentice, Geoffrey, a man who has a soothing way with people and animals. Work becomes the least of Tiffany’s problems once word of Granny Weatherwax’s death reaches the realm of the elves. A cruel usurper casts out their Queen who is viewed as weak because of her caution after her earlier defeat by Tiffany and her wariness of the human’s new iron horses. Tiffany shelters the diminished Queen while facing the threat of marauding elf hordes, backed by her trusty Nac Mac Feegles and other allies. Though this title was written during Pratchett’s final days, there is nothing rushed here; indeed, this final book stands among the very best of his work. In one poignant scene, Death remarks on Granny Weatherwax’s passing, “And far away, in someplace unthinkable, a white horse was being unsaddled by a figure with a scythe with, it must be said, some sorrow.” And so, too, will readers mourn the loss of such an irreplaceable writing talent. VERDICT Readers young and old will savor this tale that emphasizes the values of hard work and standing firm in the face of evil. An exceptionally crafted finale from one of the greats.—Eric Norton, McMillan Memorial Library, Wisconsin Rapids, WI

Review

“Fans will also find plenty of well-loved elements: exuberant wordplay, vaudevillian humor, the rambunctious blue-skinned Nac Mac Feegle, and-beneath it all-a susurrus of shivery archetype and myth. Pratchett’s final work is a tour de force of compassion, great wit, and gleeful storytelling.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))

“Terry was one of our greatest fantasists, and beyond a doubt the funniest.” (George R. R. Martin)

“A Terry Pratchett book is a small miracle.” (Neil Gaiman)

“Discworld is one of the very most fabulous creations in all of literature.” (Patrick Ness)

“No writer in my lifetime has given me as much pleasure and happiness.” (A. S. Byatt)

“A writer of monumental talent.” (Rick Riordan)

“Beloved fantasy writer Pratchett died this spring, and his dedicated and immense fan base will want his final novel. His storytelling is pure magic, and fans will grieve anew that this is the last of it. Stock up.” (Booklist)

Like many other readers I approached Sir Terry’s final book with a mix of excitement (A New Terry Pratchett book!!) and melancholy (it is the last Terry Pratchett book). I read it all in nearly one go.

There are several negative reviews posted here and elsewhere suggesting that those of us that enjoyed The Shepherd’s Crown are merely reacting emotionally to it being Sir Terry’s final book and are somehow incapable or unwilling to see the books faults. I would suggest that many of them are also having a purely emotional reaction because they did not like it, or perhaps it was not the final book they were hoping for. Several have even suggested that Sir Terry did not write The Shepherd’s Crown, unable or unwilling to realize that Sir Terry’s "voice" has been changing for awhile now. A degenerative fatal disease will do that to a person.

I did enjoy The Shepherd’s Crown. It was not the final book I was hoping for; I would have preferred a final romp with the wizards or the Watch. But this is still a Discworld book. It is true this book has its faults. I agree with other reviews that sometimes minutiae are described in minute detail while many important events go by very quickly. I cannot complain about the appearance of a few tangential characters reacting to a major event. This event would no doubt be noticed by a great many people on the Disc. These appearances, particularly Mustrum Ridcully and the Patrician do feel a bit forced, but I view them more as Sir Terry giving a last Hail! and farewell to characters he loved the best and could not let his final work pass without them getting a nod. And it was much less intrusive than it could have been, and much less ridiculous than say Russell Davies pathetic goodbye to Doctor Who.

I can’t say enough about this book. It’s shocking, alarming, eye-opening and entertaining, but most importantly…EMPOWERING. It will make you understand the power to change your health really IS in YOUR HANDS. We’ve come to believe that good health is "complicated" and that it’s something best left to the "white coats" because we’re somehow…not qualified to understand how our own body works. We’re inundated with radio and TV commercials that insist you, "Ask your doctor if medication `X’ is right for you." Is it any wonder we’ve become completely disconnected from our own instincts and don’t know how to listen to our bodies anymore? We don’t trust ourselves and have abdicated control of our most precious commodity, our health, over to a "professional" or industry we know nothing about. The real crisis in healthcare isn’t the astronomical amount of dollars it continually consumes, but the loss of our own wellbeing. That’s the real price.

The 9 Steps gives great information on elements that are essential to ANY healing process, whether from a cold or cancer. These things HAVE to be incorporated into your life. I was glad to see they’re easy and again…completely within the average person’s power to make these life changes. You’ll be surprised about the simplest things like hunger or your sense of thirst and what they’re really telling you about your overall condition.

Perhaps most important are the sections on toxicity and hormonal optimization. Your eyes will be opened about all the diseases you thought were "genetic" or that "just run in my family" that can be completely attributed to the toxic world we live in. This isn’t some doomsday book.

This is the very best, clearest and most complete book on surgical knots and related information I’ve ever found. Clear, large line drawings make it simple to tie the knots with some practice. The real key to being useful is, of course, knowing well what you can and can’t do. No book can teach you how to do brain surgery.

I would suggest, however, that someone who does not have a solid background in medicine needs to have a copy of a good anatomy book as well as this one. It is important to understand tissue layers and their relationship to make best use of this book.

This is good to keep us advanced dive medics refreshed on procedure. It also expands on techniques with good graphics and instruction.

I needed something Simple and straightforward for teaching students. It met those requirements plus had additional helpful information. Very good

The problem with therapy and relationship books is that they are all the equivalent of medieval "medicine." There is no science, no data-driven outcomes, no predictive hypothesis testing and hence no real progress. Every practitioner has their own set of nostrums, some helpful and some absurd, just like every witch-doctor has his own set of feathers and fetish items. Step forward Sue Johnson. Although she has taken only baby-steps towards a true scientific model of attachment relationships, it’s welcome progress indeed. Unlike the vast majority of her peers, she grasps that our behaviors have been fashioned by selection pressure over the millennia. She looks for why such behaviors should have adaptive value, and this enables her to side-step the mumbo-jumbo of co-dependence, inappropriate behavior, etc. and get right to the heart of what seems to be going on between couples when their relationship is in trouble.

For people who want confirmation that their partner is "too clingy" or "too cold" or whatever, this is not the book for you. Nor is it a "why you should be strong and suck it up" book. It is about our basic needs, our need for at least one other adult human being to be there for us when we need it. It is about why we’re wired up to be that way, what kinds of behaviors result from this hard-wiring, how things can go wrong, and how things can be fixed. At the heart of the book is Johnson’s vision of us as all needing at least one refuge, one place of safety and support in an otherwise indifferent and cold universe.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is currently in fashion among couples therapists, and Sue Johnson is one of its chief architects. In Hold Me Tight, which is offered as a guide (including exercises at the end of each chapter) for couples to work through EFT on their own, Dr Johnson presents "seven conversations for a lifetime of love."

When all of the clever labels designed to help promote the brand are stripped away–"the demon dialogs," "freeze and flee," "hold me tight"–the advice comes down to this: communication with your partner in which you can be vulnerable, risk showing your frailties, and make yourself emotionally available should open the door to reciprocity by your partner and communication of deep emotional intensity, an opportunity for sharing, bonding, and building trust.

Communication in which partners are closed and defensive, on the other hand, closes the possibility for genuine emotional connection and can set off destructive spirals of recrimination and defensiveness, leading in turn to feelings of alienation and separation and, in the most severe case, dissolution of the relationship.

Any of us who has ever done "work" on ourselves or on our relationships has heard this before, and we understand the fundamental wisdom of trying to get in touch with ourselves, with our feelings, and of having the courage to give our partner access to those inner-most, most intimate places, to be willing to stand before our partner emotionally naked, trusting that they will not take advantage of our vulnerability, that they will not reject us, that they will, in a healthy relationship, embrace us.

CLASSIFICATION: The Heartstriker series is an action-packed urban fantasy series with a strong dose of comedy, post-apocalyptic SF themes and dragons.

ANALYSIS: Ever since I got my hands on The Spirit Thief, the debut book by Rachel Aaron, I’ve been enchanted by the worlds she imagines and the characters that inhabit them. When she announced this new series, I was very much looking forward to it with a lot of curiosity. After reading Nice Dragons Finish Last, I was thrilled to bits with the new series.

One Good Dragon Deserves Another or OGDDA as the abbreviation goes is the brilliant follow up to Nice Dragons Finish Last (NDFL). It’s a cracker of a sequel that basically starts within a month of the climax of NDFL and basically widens up the world, and story in every way possible. I’ll be discussing some plot points of the story which will be spoiler-ish so please be forewarned of it.

The plot opens up with Julius and Marci happily forming a partnership and being able to do their job as curse-removal specialists. The problem arises when Bethesda returns to the DFZ and grabs Julius to go with her to a special meeting. Which turns out to be the upcoming nuptials (of sorts) of Ivan Heartstriker and Svena White Witch of the Three sisters. While this happy event is a very perfunctory one, it turns out Bob being a seer has invited a special dragon to this ceremony. That dragon being Amelia, who is the only surviving member of the A clutch and a mighty dragon in herself. While Julius is unaware of who she is, he does get to know her and is bemused by her interest in him.

Things however take a horrible turn when Estella, the oldest daughter of the Three sisters returns and hatches a plan to defeat Bob at his seer game.
Rachel Aaron’s ONE GOOD DRAGON DESERVES ANOTHER is witty, fresh, and fun. A sequel that expands on world building, characters, and the series plot makes this one a winner.

Our story opens two months after the events of the first book and Julius Heartstriker and his human mage friend Marci are hiding out in the DFZ. Who are they hiding from? Depends who you ask, but anyone bearing the name of Julius’ dragon clan –Heartstriker – is someone to avoid so far as he’s concerned. But family is tough to dodge even at the best of times, so when you’ve got scores of draconic brothers and sisters there’s no hiding out for long. Sooner than Julius would like his family are back in the picture, dragging the “Nice Dragon” into dragon clan politics – and maybe even war.

If there’s one thing clan Heartstriker is good at it’s getting into trouble and stepping on toes…and chopping off heads. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise when Estella, dragon Seer and the de facto head of the Three Sisters clan, starts targeting the Heartstrikers directly. While our protagonists Julius and Marci are worried, the matriarch of the clan Bethesda doesn’t bat a single heavily mascaraed eyelash. After all, what does a powerful clan of almost a hundred dragons have to fear from Estella? But all bets are off when a Seer gets involved…

Fan favourites Bob and Chelsie are back and better than ever in ONE GOOD DRAGON DESERVES ANOTHER, taking a more active role in Julius’ life. I adored both characters in the first book, but getting a peek at their individual motivations and agendas was fascinating!

At first glance I thought this ebook was for recipes but its more then that, This book is also bout living with a Thyroid disease also known as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis a condition in which your immune system attacks your thyroid, a small gland at the base of your neck below your Adam’s apple. Karen Frazier the author of this book has been living with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis for 20 yrs and how hard it is to give up gluten, corn, soy, and dairy and inflammatory foods that come in a standard regular american diet.

This was a very interesting book because it educates on the causes and symptoms of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and the triggers you need to avoid.
It starts off with the five tips to treat the Hashimoto’s thyroiditis by eating healthy with the proper foods, through diet. This book offers Recipes and an easy action Plan with 1 month shopping list that helps you keep track of the foods you need to have available for the 3-week meal plan. The action plans it provides you with tools like for example the Symptom tracker chart weekly meal plan that i already use in my diet plan.

I like this book because it also preps you with the 3-day cleanse and educates you on eating healthy foods without the chemicals and artificial flavors, let alone the processed foods and sugars we need to eliminate if you suffer from Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. I dont suffer from this condition but I do have hormone imbalance and this is the perfect book for me because it has helped me regulate my eating habits and the foods I need to be avoiding. When it came to the recipes, I enjoyed the veggie scramble for breakfast. All recipes have indicators of nut-free/quick n easy/ etc.

A Different Mirror: A History of Multicultural America 1st Edition PDF Free Download

A Different Mirror: A History of Multicultural America 1st Edition
Author: Visit ‘s Ronald Takaki Page ID: 0316831123

From Publishers Weekly

In a vibrantly rich, moving multicultural tapestry, Takaki ( Strangers from a Different Shore ) provides a fresh slant on American society by tracing the interwoven histories of Native Americans, Africans, Chinese, Japanese, Chicanos, Irish and Jewish immigrants. We see how 17th-century white planters, anxious to weaken an armed, politicized, white proletariat, enslaved an unarmed black workforce, with explosive consequences. We follow Chicano struggles as an integral part of America’s westward expansion and learn how Jewish-black solidarity extends back to John Brown’s uprising in 1856 against slavery in Kansas, an insurrection in which Jews participated. We see how oppression of the Irish (the first people the English called “savages”) foreshadowed the subjugation of Native Americans. Interweaving voices from all points on the ethnic rainbow, Takaki, ethnic studies professor at UC Berkeley, has produced a brilliant revisionist history of America that is likely to become a classic of multicultural studies. From School Library Journal

YA-Takaki traces the economic and political history of Indians, African Americans, Mexicans, Japanese, Chinese, Irish, and Jewish people in America, with considerable attention given to instances and consequences of racism. The narrative is laced with short quotations, cameos of personal experiences, and excerpts from folk music and literature. Well-known occurrences, such as the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, the Trail of Tears, the Harlem Renaissance, and the Japanese internment are included. Students may be surprised by some of the revelations, but will recognize a constant thread of rampant racism. The author concludes with a summary of today’s changing economic climate and offers Rodney King’s challenge to all of us to try to get along. Students will find this overview to be an accessible, cogent jumping-off place for American history and political science assignments, plus a guide to the myriad other sources identified in the notes.

This is an excellent multi-cultural account of American history. Takaki focuses on the perspectives of many different cultural groups, providing several interesting, unique and sometimes sobering stories of America’s history. After reading this book, you may find yourself feeling cheated by your grade school history lessons. This work is fair, honest, and *VERY* well documented, with endnote references on almost every page.
I don’t believe Takaki has a score to settle with this book. Nor do I believe he is racist or *overly* slanted, but I can see how some might feel that way. His focus on nontraditional perspectives seems to me an effort to balance the scale a bit by emphasizing the viewpoints, stories and facts that have been under-emphasized in the past. Perspectives include those of the Irish, Japanese, blacks, Native Americans, and others as various times throughout American history. To me, Takaki does a very good job of putting the reader in the mindset of the people at a certain place and time.
Stories in this book are not sugar-coated, which may at times be unsettling, but the facts and research that back the stories up are indisputable. Takaki uses many direct quotes and indirect references to underscore his points. His accounts are credible, believable and educational. This book should be required reading in all high schools, but should not be considered a replacement for traditional American history texts. It is more a book about cultural perspectives in history than about historical facts. As an example, Takaki will devote many pages to very specific events in history to catch a specific cultural perspective, while completely glazing over many larger and arguably more historically significant timeframes.

A Memory of Light – January 8, 2013

A Memory of Light (Wheel of Time, Book 14) Hardcover – January 8, 2013
Author: Visit ‘s Robert Jordan Page ID: 0765325950

Review

“The battle scenes have the breathless urgency of firsthand experience, and the . . . evil laced into the forces of good, the dangers latent in any promised salvation, the sense of the unavoidable onslaught of unpredictable events bear the marks of American national experience during the last three decades, just as the experience of the First World War and its aftermath gave its imprint to J. R. R. Tolkien’s work.” ―The New York Times on The Wheel of Time®

About the Author

Robert Jordan (October 17, 1948–September 16, 2007), a native of Charleston, South Carolina, was the author of the bestselling The Wheel of Time®, with millions of books in print.

BRANDON SANDERSON grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska. He lives in Utah with his wife and children and teaches creative writing at Brigham Young University. In addition to completing Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time®, he is the author of such bestsellers as the Mistborn trilogy, Warbreaker, TheAlloy of Law, The Way of Kings, Rithmatist, and Steelheart. He won the 2013 Hugo Award for “The Emperor’s Soul,” a novella set in the world of his acclaimed first novel, Elantris.

NOTE: I tried to make this review as spoiler-free as possible but still enjoyable for people that have read the book. You might not want to read it if you want to go into the book with an absolutely blank slate, but none of the book’s surprises are spoiled if you do read it.

————–

I know there are no endings to the Wheel of Time and this is merely AN ending, but I still can’t believe the Wheel of Time is over.

This book is a perfect ending. The main theme of the Wheel of Time has always been balance between two opposing forces – saidin and saidar, Darkness and Light, good and evil. The resolution of the story carries that philosophy to its logical place – there’s no other way it could’ve ended.

Don’t go into this book expecting all your questions to be answered – some are, but a lot aren’t. It feels right, though – there are far bigger things going on.

Most of this book involves battles. Tarmon Gai’don is the Last Battle, and the stakes are truly desperate. The book does a great job of conveying the scale of this conflict, even though it’s exhausting to read about. Any less, and it would’ve been too easy to win. The usual "no one dies" approach that the rest of the books have does not apply. Some very bad things happen to very good people, and death seems better than some of them. Our heroes are outnumbered and outmaneuvered, and it shows. Even at the end, you’re not left feeling like it’s been a great victory – you’re horrified. There’s still hope, though, and that’s what matters.

Of course, it’s not all bleak – there are several moments where characters are really awesome, including some unexpected ones (Gaul, you are the man).
The Wheel of Time is finished. That’s a statement that’s going to take a while to get used to. The first volume of the series, The Eye of the World, was published in January 1990. George Bush Snr. and Margaret Thatcher were still in power and the Cold War was still ongoing. Fourteen books, four million words, eleven thousand pages and over fifty million sales (in North America alone) later, the conclusion has finally arrived. Can it possibly live up to the expectations built up over that time?

It is a tribute to the plotting powers of Robert Jordan, the writing skill of Brandon Sanderson (who took over the series after Jordan’s untimely death in 2007) and the hard work of Jordan’s editors and assistants that A Memory of Light is – for the most part – a triumphant finale. Given the weight of expectations resting on the novel, not to mention the unfortunate circumstances under it was written, it is unsurprising that it is not perfect. The novel occasionally misfires, is sometimes abrupt in how it resolves long-running plot strands and sometimes feels inconsistent with what has come before. However, it also brings this juggernaut of an epic fantasy narrative to an ending that makes sense, is suitably massive in scope and resolves the series’ thematic, plot and character arcs satisfactorily – for the most part.

It is a familiar viewpoint that The Wheel of Time is a slow-burning series, with Robert Jordan not afraid to have his characters sitting around talking about things for entire chapters (or, in one case, an entire novel) rather than getting on with business.
All kidding and snark aside, I feel like a widower leaving the cemetary after a soured marriage has ended with the death (by natural causes) of a bi-polar spouse. Tonight on the Red Line I fnished the final volume of ‘The Wheel of Time.’ The passionate book affair of my youth that grew stale, bitter and embarrassing before rekindling into acceptance, fondness, and nostalgia has ended. Thank the Light.

Some thoughts with, forgive me (or don’t forgive me. Bite me), spoilers-

THE GOOD:

– Egwen al’Vere. I always knew this was about Egwene, and in the end, she delivered and left the stage without needing an encore.

– Rand al’Thor. After passing through what Joseph Campbell called the Apotheosis in ‘The Heroe’s Journey,’ Rand became likeable again, and I was again invested in his success.

– al’Lan Mandragoran. Yes, he is the grizzled, gruff, wounded archetypical hero we’ve seen numerous times, often wearing the face of Clint Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones, John Wayne, etc., but I’m a sucker for that character everytime.

– People died, almost too many. While not ballsy enough to go all "Game of Thrones" and kill off principle characters when the story needed to go there (except once), neither was the Last Battle a gutless "Deathly Hallows" finale that only offed C-list players.

– The point of view (as with George RR Martin’s novels, but for different reasons) slid off the main characters a lot. This annoyed many readers, but I think was necessary as we have spent over 9,000 pages with those characters as written by Robert Jordan before he died, and each moment spent with those characters as written by another author put the reader in peril of tripping over something that would not have rung true.
